Perspectives from the Finish Line by Jim Braden (TWRC member) June 2015 online at Runners World The Loop
Perspectives from the Finish Line
“Who moved the finish line?!” That was on the back of a runner’s T-shirt I was passing a few years ago. I remember it vividly because it was exactly what I had been thinking. The convention center, where the marathon finished, was so huge that it appeared much closer than it was; my finishing kick was finished, and I still had a quarter mile slog to the finish line.
I’m turning 80 soon, approaching the final finish line. I didn’t begin running until my late 30’s. I eventually became a committed life style runner. More than a decade ago I tumbled to a perspective which I have not yet seen articulated by others as I have experienced it: Let the negatives of declining performance go. Accept that it is inevitable. But you can retard the rate at which you would inexorably otherwise decline physically with age, by working hard to stay in the game as long and as hard as you can – becoming healthier longer than those who yield sooner to the increasing difficulty of staying in the game - a different dimension of competition....

Over 40 runners showed up for the annual VillaSport run. Not a bad run with temps in the mid-70s to start but of course it was a bit humid being June in Houston. BIG thanks once again for letting TWRC members use their facilities for the weekend!
Cheering for the "cool" running weather.
With a start around 68 F and not-so-high humidity, we really lucked out weather wise for late May in the Woodlands.
Another Great TWRC run.
This is the 5th year TWRC has had a run aid station as part of Ironman Texas.
TWRC members and others help run the station and get to see first hand how hard these athletes work under the hot Texas sun and brutal Houston humidity. I hear last years' completion rate was 93%; this year it was 88%.
BIG thanks to all the came out to volunteer at the TWRC run Aid Station #7, hope to see you next year!
Below are two group photos of the first shift before the runners appeared. Login and check out the other photos from Ironman Texas.

It is that time of year again: the fourth annual The Woodlands Marathon.
For those of you running in, volunteering for, working on the race committee or just out cheering on athletes and teammates at one of the affiliated events next weekend, thank you for all that you do.
I ask very little, but my request is to take into consideration and share with your athletes and/or teammates this year's schedule to our annual Speaker Series, which is sponsored by The Woodlands Marathon Management. And then attend!
We've wrapped up our schedule much earlier this year to get the word out on what we've got going on next Thursday and Friday.
Intriqued about Badwater? Come Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Want to hear from an Olympic bronze medalist in our sport? Come a little earlier at 2:15 p.m. - and bring some money with you to buy Coach Al's new book. :-)
(For those of you who may not know, Al Lawrence used to coach Dan Green.)
Know an athlete that needs to get back in the game? Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. may be most to their liking.
There's something for everybody - racing tips from Finish Strong Coaching, injury prevention from CHI St. Luke's Health, youth running, inspiring charity stories and a 2015 Grammy winner at our opening ceremony at 11 a.m. on Friday.
And we may have an update on Trails development in The Woodlands, but that's not confirmed yet. (If so, it would be at 10:15 a.m. on Friday morning.)
I'll also be hosting an Internet Radio Marathon Preview show from the stage from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. You can listen on your computer at www.tsrnsports.com or download the free TSRN Sports app at the Apple Store or Google Play and tune in on your smartphone.
And if all of that isn't enough to entice you, attendance at each session can pay off in the form of a 2016 entry to the marathon, half marathon, 5K or 2K.
Thanks again for all you all do in our communities here in The Woodlands and Montgomery County.
