Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA, pronounced "hurrah") is a nonprofit association founded in 1993 to promote running as a competitive sport and a healthful exercise in the Houston area. HARRA provides a wide variety of benefits and services to its members and to the running community, and provides the running community with a collective voice on issues that affect all runners in the Houston area.

 JAROSLAV ("JARI") VODEHNAL

Jari VodenalWe have lost one of HARRA's most active and beloved members. Jari Vodehnal was killed in a motorcycle accident near Schulenburg last Thursday, Oct. 3rd. Jari belonged to the Terlingua Track Club and has been a fixture in the Houston running community for over 30 years.

You may not have met Jari, but if you've participated in any HARRA event you have certainly seen him and benefitted from his presence. Jari was a key member of the HARRA-sponsored AED Team and was omnipresent on the sidelines of most races.

Jari had a "big" personality, a pervasive smile and a kind (and "bleeding") heart. He was an irrepressible punster with a penchant for wearing funny hats. He was also a dedicated and competitive runner. He remains the only master athlete I have met who didn't believe in age-grading race times. "You're either fast or your not", he said.

He is survived by his daughter Wendy and extended family.

A celebration of Jari's life and friendship will take place THIS Sunday, October 13th, 2-4 pm at Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Blvd.

Attire is casual and, if so provisioned, wear Hawaiian shirts, 'boonie' hats ("his" hat style of choice)...

SATURDAY OCTOBER 19 - VOLUNTEER DAY FOR DEMOLITION OF CURRENT STRETCHING DECK AT MEMORIAL PARK TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW STRETCHING DECK:

Peter Birckhead announced today that after almost 80 weeks of fund raising and planning,  construction will finally begin on a new stretching deck for Memorial Park replacing the current one just southeast of the Tennis Center.  Please join him on Saturday, October 19 from 7 am until 3 pm for volunteer day and the demolition of the current deck.  Harvey Builders, who will be constructing the new deck, will be providing all the tools, dumpster, equipment , etc. We do ask that everyone who volunteers wear long pants, sturdy shoes/boots, no cut off shirts. Harvey Builders will also be providing gloves, hard hats, and eye glasses for those that do not have them.

So that Harvey Builders has a general idea of how many people to expect please let Peter know via email peterbirckhead@comcast.net  that you plan on participating. He may also be reached at 713-819-1980 if you have any questions.

A formal dedication ceremony will be held in mid to late November for the opening of the new stretching deck.

The second race of the HARRA Fall Series will be the Space City 10 Miler in Clear Lake this Sunday, Oct. 13.

If you have not yet done so, renew your HARRA dues online at the Member Renewal Page or at the HARRA tent before the race to ensure that your race is counted in the HARRA Runner of the Season (ROTS) and Interclub Competitions!

 GOT CROSS-COUNTRY?

The "Practice for the Tour", the HARRA-sponsored series of FREE, fun and low-key cross-country races returns every Thursday evening in October at 6PM. Race distances range from 3-5 miles. Age-graded results are tabulated for each race and cumulative results for those who run all races will determine the final winners of the series. It's a lot of fun and a great introduction to cross-country running if you've never done it before. Open to everyone. You do not have to be a HARRA member to run (but being one means good karma). The only requirement is to sign a waiver and promise to "be careful".

Second Race is THIS Thursday, Oct.10 at  Ho Chi Min Trail, Memorial Park (park at the rugby field)

The remainder of the series:

 Your VOTE Counts!

The Houston Area Road Runners Association is working to make sure we are meeting the needs of our membership. In the upcoming weeks, we will be sending out a short series of surveys asking for your input and feedback. We hope you will take the time to complete the surveys, and to add incentive, we will have a drawing for two $75 gift certificates to area running stores. Individual responses will not be noted, but the aggregate total will be used for future planning. Please watch your emails, and we ask you to take the few minutes needed to complete the surveys. Thank you in advance for your time, and for being a HARRA member.

Hey folk, thanks to everyone who came out to Party in the Park on Saturday. Was it my imagination or was it a smidgen cooler, signifying Fall is on its way? Maybe, maybe not...but one can always hope.

Anyway, this is Michelle writing the email this week since Kathi is in France recovering from the Marathon de Medoc, which I heard had the Best....Pasta...Party...Ever! Wine, dancing, and hardly any sleep the night before a marathon...what more could you ask for? So, on to the news:

Fall Series Race Discounts  All of the HARRA Series Races leading up to the marathon offer discount for HARRA members.   Usually registration just asks if you are a HARRA member and what your number is (which can be found at http://www.harra.info/index.php/about/members).   For the half marathon, enter the code "HARRA" in the discount box to claim your membership discount.

You might have seen the excellent article about PIM  by Roberta MacInnis in the Houston Chronicle that highlighted the success of PIMster Christine Wardwell in becoming a runner and incorporating healthy lifestyle changes.

It's not too late to Register for POWER IN MOTION (PIM), but do so ASAP!!  HARRA’s beginner and intermediate 5K training program,  POWER IN MOTION, starts THIS Wednesday, September 11th.  PIM meets every Wednesday, at 6:30pm to about 7:45 or 8:00pm in Memorial Park for ten weeks through November 13th, 2013. The goal of the program is to help participants run their first or fastest 5K.  The program ends with the "goal" race, Alex’s 5K”, on Saturday, November 16th, 2013. Registration fee is $39.00 (not including signmeup.com processing fee and race fee). PIM will be meeting on the East side of Memorial Loop, by the playground across from St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.

Since 70% of our participants are returning Pimsters, we definitely accommodate intermediate runners who are wanting to improve their 5K race time. PIM WILL MAKE YOU FASTER! Visit the website www.powerinmotion.org to register.

PIM Goal Race - Alex's 5K: There is a special registration option for all HARRA members and PIM participants allowing you to receive a $3.00 discount. https://secure.eztoregister.com/Search/event.aspx?id=22424

The HARRA Fall Race Series will be starting very soon beginning with the HARRA Cross Country Relay on Saturday, September 28, 5PM in Spotts Park. This relay consists of 4 legs of 2 miles and is presented by the Tornados Running Club. Participation is a great way to jump start your running season and generates a lot of team and club spirit. ...But for your team to count in the HARRA Club and Team Competition, all team members need to be current with their HARRA membership. Individual team members also need to make sure that their club affiliation (if they have one) is designated correctly on our membership roster. You can check your club affiliation by logging on to the membership area on the HARRA website.

This year we will be more strict about membership verification to streamline getting both Runner of the Season (ROTS) and Club and Team standings out to you in a timely manner.  So....don't wait till the last minute.....renew now if you haven't done so already.

HARRA 500 – The final 25

This program is for HARRA members to gain entry to the Chevron Houston Marathon.

Four hundred and seventy-five (475) slots were distributed to qualified HARRA members to access early registration to the full marathon.   There are twenty-five (25) additional entries that are available to HARRA members in November.    The criteria to receive one of these remaining 25 entries are as follows:

1) You must be a HARRA member living in one of the following counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker, Waller, Washington, and Wharton.

2) The final 25 slots will be distributed on or before December 1 and priority will be based on age grouped participation and performance in the HARRA Fall Series through the HMSA Classical 25K.   Scoring shall be your best 2 of the 3 individual fall series races at the time, age grouped and aged graded as per the Runner of the Season results.

3) The number of entries shall be distributed across the Runner of the Season age groups proportional to the age distribution of HARRA runners doing the fall series.  In previous years, running one or two Fall Series events was sufficient to gain an entry, but there is no guarantee.

4) In case there are more entries available than Fall Series runner applications, then the criteria for prioritizing the remaining entries will be based on the same criteria as for the 475 slots in the spring (Volunteerism, membership longevity, and CHM finishes).

5) The HARRA President will have 3 of the 25 entries plus any unused to distribute at his discretion.

To request an entry, please send an email stating “I would like to be considered for one of the remaining 25 full marathon entries.  I do not have an entry currently and I reside in ______ County.”  to Joe Carey at prez@harra.org and copy Roger Boak at nboka.xc@gmail.com.

You will be notified after the 25k on November 24 but no later than December 1.  If selected you will have to purchase the entry within a day or two of being notified and the pricing is at our cost (standard entry fee plus online processing charges).

The following is a Royal Baby-free Message:

HARRA Fall Series 2013 – 2014 has been scheduled:

Test yourself against the best runners in Houston in one of or more of these high quality events. As in previous years, the highest performing runners based on your best three individual events will compete to earn a prestigious HARRA Runner of the Season (ROTS) Award. These come with a cash prize and go to the top 8% of HARRA runners who race in the series in Open and various age graded Masters categories.

Score points for your HARRA Club in the series competition – participation counts not just speed.

Runners who finish all the individual events earn HARRA Ironfoot recognition for their successful achievement of race five major distances in 14 short weeks.

HARRA has worked with all these races with many years and they are all high quality. HARRA members are deeply involved in leading and volunteering at all of them in various ways from race directing to refueling stations to AED teams. If you are not running we urge you to volunteer in some capacity.

IMPORTANTLY:  If you wish to compete in the Fall Series including the marathon, but do not have an entry to the full in January, HARRA will distribute its remaining entries right after the 25k. Distribution priority will be as in previous years and favor those that are running the Fall series. Email prez@harra.org for further information.

FALL '12 and SPRING 13 ROTS WINNERS: We are currently awarding checks to winners in both the Spring '13 and the Fall '12 seasons, so check the the lists and see if your name is in bold. If you are not a winner this time, but know someone who is and suspect they are too busy doing two-a-day workouts to read their HARRA email, please let them know how to claim their prize!

Hi folks, as promised, here is a running excuse which is just weird enough to be real, courtesy of Elena Grassi:

In late April I ran the Sprint for Spring 5k with my 5 yr-old son. At the start he said that this time he wanted to run by himself. Since it was a small race, through our neighborhood, with lots of friends running, I decided that it was ok to leave him alone. I kept looking back and not seeing him and after passing mile 1, I decided to turn back and go find him. After about half mile running back, I found him walking almost at the end of the race and asked him: What are you doing??!! His answer: I'm going to save my energy for the end of the race, so I can sprint and pass lots of people! After dragging along for the rest of the run, we finally got to the finish line, and he did sprint ... and guess who was last? MOM who couldn't catch up with him! ... now which excuse is better his or mine?!

Thanks for sharing Elena. I guess your son instinctively knows about negative splits!

Hi folks, I heard back from Darrell Yarbrough regarding his “creative running excuses”, and I think they originated more from his imagination than from reality, but they’re still really clever. Enjoy!

I would have run faster but the ice kept spilling out of my drink;

I could have won that race except the fast people showed up;

I almost won that race, and then the Kenyan caught me tying my timing chip to his shoe;
I used to run faster but then realized that that I love running so much, I want the racing experience to last longer; and

When I run too fast it always messes my hair up for the post-race party.

There will be a more reality-based excuse next week, so stay tuned. Also, this is a fairly meaty email with lots of good stuff, so please take a minute or two to at least read the headlines.

MEMORIAL PARK ARTWORK: Any of you wondering what the new metal thingamajigs are across from the croquet court on the MP jogging trail? Well, I wondered, and emailed the Memorial Park Conservancy to find out. Here’s what they are: “The project is part of a city-wide display of public art placed by the Texan French Art Alliance. It is called “Open the Door” and, once fully installed, will display painted doors (one side by a French artist, one side by a Texas artist). What you see right now are the door hangers, the doors will be placed in the hangers for the public to enjoy. The doors will be hung this week or early next week.” Kudos to Memorial Park for promoting public art.

Only two HARRA members knew the genesis of the lyric “Dejon where did we go wrong”. John Lauten successfully identified the artist, song and album, and Margarita Ybarra successfully identified the artist and song…so, drum roll please: Boz Scagg’s “Love me Tomorrow” from the album “Silk Degrees”. Good job John and Margarita!

Anyone else want to suggest a mystery lyric? Shoot me an email and I’ll put it in next week’s email blurb. Well, dunno if anyone will pay attention to my email next week, since it’ll be sent on Xmas Eve. So maybe it will be in the next email…but that’s New Year’s Eve. The holidays are getting in the way of my email schedule! Bah humbug…not really.

41ST HOUSTON MARATHON:  Fellow runners, the signature event on our calendar is soon upon us once again. Those of you who run the globe know that we have a gem here in Houston thanks to the outstanding work of the non-profit Houston Marathon Committee. HARRA is committed to supporting our home town major marathon to the max. The marathon has grown to 25000 entrants and 8000 volunteers. The running community is and should be heavily engaged in volunteering for this event. If you are not running, please volunteer. If you are running, please recruit friends and family to volunteer.

While HARRA members are engaged throughout all volunteer roles, we are giving special attention to the water (refueling) stations. We especially want to strengthen the large stations early in the race. This is ideal for volunteering in that you are finished early enough to go support runners later in the race. Unless you are with a group that will volunteer elsewhere, please register or have your friends register at one of the following:

Mile 2 half marathon course: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1158919

Mile 3.5 total field: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1172553

Mile 5.0 total field: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1158936

If you are affiliated with one of the groups planning to work at a station on the course please go there as we do not want to take volunteers away from them.  Stations led by running groups include:

Houston Striders Mile 21.5: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1159010

Finish Line Sports Mile 23: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1159011

Running Alliance Sports/ BARC/CLFC Mile 11.5 half: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1159008

Groups planning to help at various stations on the course include PIM, Houston Fit, and Brian O'Neills Running Club. There are other stations led by HARRA captains such as Dale Lee Mile 20: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1159009 and Bob Chandler Mile 14: http://houstonmarathon.volunteerhub.com/Events/Event/Summary.aspx?EventID=1162470

OTHER STUFF: The monthly BOD is the third Monday of the month at 6:00pm at the community room at Beck’s in Memorial Park. All are welcome, EXCEPT for tonight. Only BOD members tonight. Also join us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/39543762250/.

Here’s another installment of HARRA members doing non-running stuff: Ino Cantu recently returned from touring southern Spain (Andalucía) where he was very impressed with the scenery and ate lotsa olives. However, the olives and the scenery prevented him from training. Welcome back Ino; time to cut back on the olives!

And Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Here’s my non-running trivia: I’m going to Santa Fe, NM to spend Thanksgiving with my family. Email me your Thanksgiving plans, and maybe I’ll mention them in next week’s email...woo hoo!

HARRA REACHES ITS GOAL Of course we did, we are runners.  Thanks to a significant donation by the Houston Marathon Foundation, the Mark Fraser Remembrance Fund surpassed its $25,000 target in early November.  The fund was established in June to raise funds to provide funding for a new stretching center at Memorial Park.   We would like to thank over 130 runners, supporters and running clubs for their contribution.   You can learn more about the planned new stretching center and the Remembrance Fund at this link: http://www.harra.org/955dir/campaigns/fraser/mff-done.html.

HARRA 500 PROGRAM: An email to the membership will be sent out later this week to solicit interest in our remaining 25 slots to allow HARRA members to enter the Chevron Houston Marathon (the full).   The criteria for the remaining 25 slots remains  unchanged from previous years: the applicant needs to be a HARRA member and, in case demand exceeds supply, priority will be based on placement in the Runner of the Season age groups in the 2012 Fall Series through the 25k.  Given that most HARRA members have an entry already, in previous years we have been able to accommodate all members’ requests, but there is no guarantee.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED A research study by a post-doctoral fellow from the University of Pittsburgh will be conducted at the Seabrook Lucky Trails Marathon and the Galveston Marathon to study the effects of marathon running on the heart.  If you plan on running either of these races, please contact Vanessa Franco at franco.vanessa@medstudent.pitt.edu and see if you can help the advancement of marathon medical science.

GIVE TO THE STUMP! Everyone who runs at Memorial Park has probably seen the stump at the 0 mile marker in front of the tennis center. This is a donation stump, and has slot in the front for spare change, cash, or checks (but not credit cards…sorry!). So if you want to help Memorial Park and their re-forestation efforts, please give to the stump.

OTHER STUFF: The monthly BOD is the third Monday of the month at 6:00pm at the community room at Beck’s in Memorial Park. All are welcome. Also join us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/39543762250/

END OF WORLD MARATHON 12/21-22/12; EARLY REGISTRATION ENDS 10/14 We would like to invite HARRA members to run our End of the World Marathon (Dec. 21) and/or Day After the End of the World Marathon (Dec. 22). Both events offer a marathon or half marathon, long sleeve shirts, custom 1.1 pound finisher medals, aid stations every 1.5 miles, 9 hour time limits, and hot pizza delivered every hour. The first 500 participants who register and complete an event both days will receive a three inch commemorative coin with the logo of each race on opposite sides. The cost for each day is $75 thru 10/14.  Race information can be found at

 www.50statesmarathonclub.com/endworld.html  and  www.50statesmarathonclub.com/afterworld.html

CHEVRON HOUSTON MARATHON PACE TEAM:   We know that some of you can run 26.2 like a Swiss watch covers 24 hours. Show off your clockwork this January. There are openings on the pace them for 3:00, 3:10, 3:20 and 6:00 finishing times.  Pace team volunteers are provided with official Houston Marathon Under Armour race gear to support their service and are reimbursed their entry fee.   Email Carlos Reyes at Carlos.Reyes@escg.jacobs.com if you are interested in this opportunity and he will provide more information.

RUNNERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE:  Being a runner is satisfying in many ways.   One way that we should not overlook is that running events in Houston generate millions for charitable and community support yearly.  Yes millions.   The not-for-profit Chevron Houston Marathon last year raised $2.3 million via their Run for the Reason program.   We are sure that some of you or that someone you know lacks an entry and is hankering to run the marathon or half marathon on January 13th.   We would like to make sure you are all aware of the Houston Marathons “Heroes” program.  For a tax-deductible donation of $350, plus the registration fee, you can obtain an entry.  Many of us are quite willing to spend that kind of money to travel to a destination half or a full.   Make your next destination Houston and support a great cause!  You can register through this link http://www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com/Registration/HeroesRegistration.cfm

HARRA MEMBERSHIP CONTACT: If you have questions about your membership status and/or number, please visit http://www.harra.org/955dir/documents/membership.html Do not email me or reply to this email with membership questions, because I will just refer you to this link. Hi everyone, with the cooler weather comes lots of new stuff in this email. So please take a moment to at least scan the headlines. Also, looks like I’m back on schedule and will be sending out these emails every Monday around mid-day. So enjoy! Michelle

MEMBERSHIP PERKS: Hey folks, if you don’t renew your HARRA membership by 9/30 for the 2012-2013 year, then you will stop getting my emails…what a bummer that would be! So, if you still want to receive these highly informative, beautifully written emails, renew at www.HARRA.org by 9/30.

This is a tour of Houston’s finest outdoor art works in a casually paced run - FREE, all invited, refreshments. For more information contact Lee: 713-409-5517/

TORNADOS CROSS COUNTRY RELAY 9/29:  The first race of the HARRA Fall Series will take place on September 29 at Spotts Park at 5 pm, so get your 4 person relay teams together. Yes you read that right, Spotts Park. The usual venue along Buffalo Bayou at Shepard is not available due to construction. Further information and links to the signup available at http://www.tornadosrunningclub.com/events-calendar/harra-xc-relay/

VOTE YES FOR PROPOSITION B 11/6:  On November 6, the city of Houston will vote on a bond initiative (Proposition B) that will authorize the city to borrow $166M for parks and trails development. The HARRA Board has formally endorsed this bond initiative as we believe additional green space and safe pathways in the region will be of great benefit to the running community.  We urge our membership to learn more about this initiative, actively support it and vote on November 6. You can learn more about the initiative at the Parks By You website http://parksbyyou.org/. You can also see a short video about the plan which includes a plug from former HARRA President and current city councilman Steve Costello:

Hey folks, the new 2012-2013 HARRA Board will have its first meeting tonight (which everyone is invited to attend, BTW; see the bottom of this email). I anticipate food fights, disorderly conduct, and general mayhem…just kidding! Also a huge Thank You goes out to our exiting Board members - Ron and Jen - for all the great work they’ve done over the years.

HARRA ESTABLISHES THE MARK F. FRASER REMEMBRANCE FUND The Mark Fraser Remembrance Fund has been established and fund raising has begun by HARRA to provide significant funding for the overall cost of a newly designed and constructed stretching area at Memorial Park.  In cooperation with Kirksey Architecture, the Memorial Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, a significant donation will be made by HARRA in remembrance of Mark Fraser to fund this project. It is anticipated that final project approvals and permits will be issued within the next 30 – 45 days.

HARRA will collect donations in the remembrance of Mark Fraser that will then be donated to the Memorial Park Conservancy who will in turn contract for construction services. Kirksey Architecture will provide design, source materials, labor and additional funding to complete the project. The HARRA fundraising goal of the Mark F. Fraser Remembrance Fund is $25,000. Total project costs are expected to reach $130,000. Upon completion of the project, a ceremony will be held in which a plaque or something similar will be added to the stretching area commemorating HARRA’s contribution to the stretching area in the name of Mark F. Fraser. Project completion is planned for late September 2012. For complete details, more information, and to make a donation please visit www. HARRA.org.

Subject: Mid April Update

The big news this week is that HARRA will be participating in a press conference Friday morning, at 11 a.m. on the Picnic Loop at Memorial Park.  The Mayor and Parks & Recreation Department Director, Joe Turner will be there.  All are welcome to attend.   Rumors are that HARRA will be donating $25,000 to the Memorial Park Conservancy for an engineering study to restore the Seymour Lieberman Trail at Memorial Park.  Anyone who runs at the park knows the poor condition of the main running trail and that it has only gotten worse with all of the bulldozers pulling dead trees from the woods.  This money is coming mainly from the proceeds of the Bayou City Classic from past years.  This years proceeds, a whopping $40,000 will be donated for tree restoration throughout the city next week at a ceremony at Apache (Title sponsor of the BCC) headquarters.

The Tour de Bayou:  Hurry, tonights tour starts at 6 p.m. at the Dog Park, along Allen Parkway near Montrose.  About 3 miles of fun as usual.  Next week's Tour is along White Oak Bayou, at White Oak Avenue and Thelma (April 17).

The famous LP Run is coming up next Wednesday evening, April 18, at the Rice University Track.  See the calendar on our website for more details on all of the runs mentioned here.

The final HARRA Spring run is the Bayou Bash Relay, Saturday 4 p.m. April 28, also at Rice University.  This one starts and finishes inside the football stadium.  Following the relay is our annual picnic with live music, food and adult beverages.

Mark Your calendar for our annual Banquet and Election, June 9 at Cadillac Bar, Shepherd and I-10.

At least 6 Fun Runs will be held around the area this Saturday morning including the Blue Bell Fun Run in Brenham, The Lake Jackson Doggy Dash, The Tomball Bunny Run, The YMCA Sprint for Spring (Stella Link Y), Kickin It for Education in Friendswood, and Striding for Self Sufficiency in League City.  Check the website for links

That's all for now.

Hey folks, what a soggy weekend. My goal was to run the BCC 10K and then the usual River Oaks 10 miler on Sunday, for a total of 16ish miles. Instead, I skipped the BCC 10K (bad Michelle!) and only did one soggy loop around Memorial Park on Sunday. So, from 16 down to 4. Not a good week for the logbook, but fortunately, I gave up on logging my miles a couple years ago. However, kudos to everyone who showed up for the BCC10K and especially to my friend Deborah, who dressed up like Marilyn Monroe Saturday AM for the BCC and then ran 18 Sunday AM…way to go Deborah! Anyway…

Memorial Park Conservancy “4 the Park”: As many of you know, Memorial Park has suffered much devastation this year due to the drought. We all know and love this Park - now is our chance to give back!

Please help support the Park by registering for this year's 4 mile run on Saturday, April 7th. For more information and to register, visit www.memorialparkconservancy.org.

Barefoot Running Survey: The Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine / Midwestern University is studying the prevalence of barefoot running and have designed a survey to help with their research. This survey is designed to be taken by all runners, not just those who have tried or contemplated barefoot running. The purpose of the survey is to help guide patient care. If you are interested in filling out the survey, please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RMYTMJJ.

Race Directors: If you want your race listed on the HARRA website, please visit www.harra.org, then click on Running in Houston/Calendar of Races, Events, Results/Inclusion in the HARRA Race Calendar. This will lead you directly to the instructions on how to list your event on the website.

Finishers will receive a technical shirt, medals, and pizza upon completion.

We are also excited to have Allison Macsas of Austin's RogueRacing participating. Allison was the 45th female at January's US Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston with a PR of 2:40. Her half-marathon best is 1:16, and she hopes to beat it March 25.

Warm-Up Series Mugs: If you didn’t pick up your warm-up series mug at the Expo during marathon weekend, you can pick it up at Finish Line Sports in Sugar Land, www.slfinishlinesports.com.

Hi all, I hope everyone had a great running weekend, starting with the Expo, the Olympic Trials, and then the Houston Marathon (or ½ Marathon, in my case). It was a pretty intensive round of running experiences, and while I was hoping that the speed flying around Buffalo Bayou on Saturday would inspire my legs on Sunday, unfortunately not. I felt great running back to my house after watching the trials, but as usual, one can’t plan for happy legs, so my legs just felt average on Sunday. But on to more inspiring stuff:

Woodlands Marathon/Half Marathon Call for Pacers: The Woodlands Marathon and Half Marathon will take place on March 3 in The Woodlands, TX.  The pace team coordinator, Randy Bradley, still needs volunteers for several pace team slots for both the full and the half.  The pacers will receive a free entry into the event, and in addition to the normal runner perks for the event they pace, they will receive a customized pacer singlet and hat.  If you’re interested, please contact Randy

Bayou City Classic 10K:

Each year HARRA puts on the annual Bayou City Classic 10K Race. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 10, and we very excited to announce that it will also include a 5K Fun Run. The Bayou City Classic is the only race that HARRA puts on each year and all the proceeds are donated to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.  Given the drought we experienced this past summer, the 2012 race really needs your support!  The City of Houston and Houston Parks and Recreation are doing everything they can to maintain the beauty of Memorial Park. The cost of maintaining the park as a result of the drought has reached into the millions.  Thanks to Apache Corporation’s love of our parks and trail systems, they have signed on as the sponsor of this event and have dubbed the race “Run for the Trees”. In addition to registering at www.bayoucityclassic.org, we would like each of you to consider further supporting the race by purchasing a sponsorship opportunity.  These sponsorship opportunities can be purchased by private individuals or companies/organizations and are tax deductible due to HARRA’s 501c 3 status.

1)  $250         Mile markers (4 have already been purchased)

2)  $250         Promotional decal for sponsor race car

3)  $250         Promotional decal for roaming car

4)  $750         Promotional banner on course

5)  $1000       Promotional banner on course bridge

6)  $1000       Post-race tent, table and chairs (10x10)

7)  $1000       Logo on back of shirts

8)  $1000       Water stop sponsorship

9) $1000        Promotional decal on street (3’x5’)

10) $1500      Logo on one sleeve of shirt

To show your support, please contact either Peter Birckhead (peterbirckhead@comcast.net), Jill DeVay (jdevay@swbell.net) or Loren Sheffer (loren@runningmags.com) for more information.  Thank you!

HARRA Runner of the Season

The results for the HARRA Runner of the Season have been updated to include results from the Metric Marathon.  Results can be seen here.

Did You Earn an Ironfoot Award in Fall 2010 or Spring 2011?

Ironfoot recipients are those who participated in all the races of that particular season's HARRA series, or those who ran all-but-one race and volunteered for the one run they missed.  If this is you, stop by the HARRA tent after this weekend's 30K to claim your prize.  And congratulations!

Chevron Houston Marathon Needs Pace Leaders

The Chevron Houston Marathon currently needs pace leaders for next month's marathon.   They need two leaders at 3:20 and two at 3:30; runners interested in these spots must be trained and capable of running at least 15 minutes faster than the pace goal and recognize they are expected to finish within about two minutes of the goal on a bad day.  Perks to being a pace team leader include refunt of the entry fee and receiving race apparel, including running shoes.

If this sounds like you, please contact the Arlen Isham, the Pace Team Coordinator at aisham@consolidated.net

HARRA Fall Series

Only two races remain in the HARRA Fall Series - the 30K this weekend and the full marathon next month.   It's not too late to register for the 30K, but the marathon, on the other hand....

(Sun.) 12/11 - Finish Line Sports Sugar Land 30K, 6:30 a.m., $55 through November 30, www.signmeup.com
(Sun.) 1/15 - Chevron Houston Marathon, SOLD OUT, www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com

Volunteer Slots for the Olympic Trials Marathon

Did you know that each athlete at the Olympic Trials will be able to prepare 9 bottles with the nutritional fluid of their choice and have it available to him or her personally at the Elite Fluid Stations?    With about 250 runners expected, that mean 2250 individual bottles will need to be deployed accurately on the right table in the right position at the right milepoint at the right time.   The logistics of this is daunting but plans are in place to make it happen.   212 volunteers, nearly all experienced runners, will be on course to get it right.

Most volunteers are returnees from last year's half marathon championship, but there are still approximately 20 spaces left for new volunteers who wish to join the Elite Fluid Station volunteer crew on Saturday morning.   These slots will be available to HARRA members on a first come, first served basis.  Email Joe Carey at jecarey@sbcglobal.net who will give you sign up instructions.  Once the remaining spaces are gone, you will go on a waiting list as there are bound to be a few more needed when the big day rolls around.

The Bayou City Classic

Planning for the 35th Annual Bayou City Classic 10K and 5K Fun Run is proceeding forward and runners may want to put this race on their calendar. The run will be on  Saturday, March 10, 2012 in downtown Houston. Recruit your centipede team and/or get that costume out of the closet. Live band will perform at the start, on the course and at the post-race party.

New for 2012 is the addition of a 5K Fun Run in order to encourage all runners and walkers regardless of age and ability to participate in the event.

Proceeds benefit improvements in Houston Parks.  Apache Corporation has joined the event as a title sponsor along with other generous sponsors. In addition to age group awards, there will be cash prizes for the top male and female runners. DesertView Services will award cash prizes to the “runners' choice” for the Best Art Car.

For more information or to register early, visit here.

Book from a Running Professor

We received the following email from Dr. Cathy Utzschneider and thought it might be a good gift idea for interested female runners:

I am a Boston College professor of competitive performance, writer for National Masters News and national site coach for www.women-running-together.com who writes about women runners. I am interested in any stories on women from your club, and also want to tell you about a new running book for women (in time for the holidays) -- MOVE! How Women Can Achieve Athletic Goals At Any Age (you can  find it on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=MOVE%21+How+Women+Can+Achieve+Athletic+Goals&x=0&y=0). I The foreword is by Zola Budd, and the book has received 5 stars from all eight reviewers.

Memorial Park Conservancy "Tree Stump"

Have you noticed a sad change in the amount of trees at Memorial Park?  Us, too.  The Memorial Park Conservancy has installed a "tree stump" at the 0 mile marker for donations for park maintenance, ie, improving the main trail.   Foresters have estimated that over 30% of the trees have already died and expect many more to die over the next several years.  Do your part to protect our trees - just think of how much money could be gained if just half the park's users contributed $1 per week.

The annual TXU Energy Turkey Trot 5K will take place on Thursday morning at the Galleria Dillards parking lot.  More information can be found at http://www.shelteringarms.org/Trot2010/register.html

The Saturday after Thanksgiving has always been a special time for HARRA as the organization hosts the Just For Kids Fun Run.  And not only do we need your involvement by volunteering, like so many of you do every holiday season, but we also are looking for a Race Director.

Been involved in a race your club has put on or helped with another event, but always wanted to lead an effort - especially that benefitted our next generation of runners?  Don't be afraid.  HARRA has more or less a "guidebook" to help you through the process.  We need a little bit of your time, energy, commitment and passion to provide our kids their own running event!

HARRA News

We apologize for being a day or two off the mark from last Sunday.

PARTY IN THE PARK ... ANOTHER SUCCESS

Many thanks to HARRA At-Large Board Member Lisa Fletcher for continuing the fine tradition that the late Mark Fraser and so many others before have set in helping introduce HARRA and our affiliated clubs to Houston's area runners at Memorial Park last Saturday.

POWER IN MOTION

HARRA's beginner training program, Power in Motion, starts Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Park.  Power in Motion is a HARRA program designed to introduce beginning runners at all capability levels to running.

The 10-week program, which meets every Wednesday night, will train and coach its participants - affectionately known as PIMsters - culminate with the Run With The Saints 5K in west Houston on Saturday, November 5.

The $39 registration fees includes a tech t-shirt, full workout schedule, personalized coaching, seminars and lots of fun.  Registration is open now at www.powerinmotion.org.  Power in Motion is a great program for someone wanting to get started, but not so ambitious they want to jump right into a marathon.  It is also good for those who may have "fallen off the wagon" and need to get re-motivated.

Interested individuals are invited to visit www.powerinmotion.org for more information and to register for the program which gets underway in just over two weeks.

THIS WEEKEND'S EVENTS

Want to race this weekend?  There certainly are plenty of options as we're not far from the official start of the fall racing season.

The HOUSTON YOUNG LAWYERS FOUNDATION 5K is set for Saturday, August 27 at 7:30 a.m. at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston.  This former Thursday night favorite has shifted to a new date and time, but the Allen Parkway course remains the same!  Online registration closes on Thursday with packet pickup at Finish Strong Sports on Thursday and Friday, August 25 and 26.

The race will be chip-timed, with drawings for door prizes after the race at the post-race party and free race day parking will be available at the Heritage Society across from Sam Houston Park behind the Kellum-Noble House.  The HYLF 5K benefits the organization's Grant Program and Change Happens!

The "No Label Brewery" in Katy on Saturday plays host to the DUCK RUN 4-Miler at 8:00 a.m.  Supporting Texas Ducks Unlimited, the race's turnaround point is at the aptly-named Duck Pond at Mark Jo Peckham Park.  For more information, please visit www.dufunrun.com/.

Need to run a little longer perhaps?  Then there's the LAKE HOUSTON 10K/5K presented by Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital at 7:15 a.m. at Kings Harbor on Lake Houston.  For more information on the second annual event, please visit www.lakehouston10k5k.com/.

RUNNING FOR FUN?

Well, it's the 11th annual Bay Area Running Club (BARC) Pub Crawl.  This year, the theme is "Up To Eleven".  The ever-growing event will rock on from Carlos's Beer Garden at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.

BARCers remind potential participants of these reminders:

- You can park your car at Club Cabo at the end and be shuttled to the start at 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  Anyone willing to shuttle others should come to Club Cabo and help.

- It will be a record temperature, plan accordingly.   There is water at every one of the 9 establishment and 2 water stops.

- It is not a race and it is not chip timed.  Instead chips can be consumed at Mamacitas and Gabachos.  If you must compete, then wear a great costume and you will win friends and admiration for a few hours.

- Ensure you have a designated driver if you will consume alcoholic beverages along the route.  Rock n Roll will never die, but you will if you are stupid.

HARRA BOARD MEETING

The next Board meeting is tomorrow night, Monday, August 15.  It will be held in the Museum Room at the Memorial Park Club House at 6 p.m.  All HARRA members are invited to attend.  Come find out how the Houston Area Road Runners Association is working on your behalf and perhaps leave the meeting with a new opportunity to work to help better running for all greater Houston area runners.

Agenda topics include, but are not limited to, HARRA's 2011-2012 Fall and Spring Series, Ironfoot, HARRA's support of the United States Olympic Marathon Trials, the Bayou City Classic and the Chevron Houston Marathon Expo Booth and coverage.  Plenty to work on!

PARTY IN THE PARK

Our annual Party in the Park will be held this Saturday, August 20, between 7 and 10 a.m.  Please stop by our tents - near the Tennis Center in Memorial Park - and have something to eat and drink, buy HARRA clothing, join a club, or just hang out after or even during your morning run.

AUGUST 13-14 WEEKEND RESULTS

Al Lawrence Running Club's Martha Long, 43, took home the master's prize on Saturday at the Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer 5K with a winning time of 20:47.  Houston's Kelly Dowe beat out the Houston Striders' John Yoder, 40, by eight seconds for the men's masters crown.  Yoder won his age group in 17:21.

Other HARRA age group winners included the Striders' Steve Schroeder, 45, and Al Lawrence's Suzy Seeley, 52.  Inflight Running's Ben Sopchak, 56, won his division as did HARRA's Peter Mullin and the Striders' Elizabeth Ahrens, who ruled their respective 60-64 divisions.

At Sunday's TriGirl Triathlon (which turned into a duathlon because of low waters in Lake Houston), Bayou City Road Runners' Carolyn Muirhead, 41, won the masters' division by five minutes with a one hour, 41-second showing over the 1-mile run, 11-mile bike and 3-mile run course in east Houston's Duessen Park.

The Woodlands Running Club's Nora Wilson, 55, was the other only HARRA member to make the podium with a crushing 11-minute margin of victory in the 55-59 age group.

Of course, the city of Houston will be the scene and the Houston Marathon Committee will be the host of the first Olympic Trials Marathon for both men and women in the same location.

Just this week, Houston2012.com was launched and it will serve as the official source for event information for media and fans as the top marathoners in the U.S. prepare for the Olympic Trials Marathon and the Road to London!

Did you know that 129 men and 166 women have already qualified for the Trials?  For the men, 68 qualified at the marathon distance while 47 and 14, respectively, punched their tickets to the Bayou City with qualifying times in the half marathon or 10K.

The women have seen 145 qualify at the marathon distance with another 11 and 10, respectively, in the half marathon and 10K.

Subject: We Need Help Finding a Sponsor

HARRA News

ATTENTION HARRA MEMBERS WE NEED YOUR HELP!

As many of you know the new “Memorial Park Outer Trail” officially opened June 16.  Mayor Parker, members of the HARRA Board, and the Memorial Park Conservancy were on hand for the event.  With over 10,000 runners using the park every day and most of the traffic on the Seymour-Leiberman Exer-Trail, a new trail is a real welcome addition to Memorial Park.  If you have not had a chance to see or use this great addition to our park I encourage you do so.

This new trail was funded by the Memorial Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.  Each year HARRA makes a substantial donation to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.  Much of the money donated by HARRA come from the proceeds of HARRA’s annual Bayou City Classic 10K race held each March in downtown Houston.  The 2012 edition will be held on Saturday, March 10.

HERE IS WHERE YOUR HELP COMES IN.

Up until this year, HEB Food Stores was the title sponsor for the race.  After a very successful 7 year partnership, HEB has decided to use their sponsorship dollars in other ways.  As a result, members of the Bayou City Classic Race Committee are seeking a new title sponsor for the event.  If anyone knows of an organization that might be interested in sponsoring this event please contact Co-Chairs of Fundraising Bayou City Classic 2012 Peter Birckhead at peterbirckhead@comcast.net or Mark Fraser at mffraser@swbell.net .

You do not have to do anything but put us in contact with the potential sponsor.  We will handle it from there.  You are welcome to help us if you wish, but it is not necessary.

Thanks for any help you can give us.  The money goes to something very dear to us all--running trails in the Houston area.

Coach Needed

My name is Heather and I am an employee with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation here in Houston. We have a half-marathon training program that raises vital needs for finding a cure to Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Right now, we are in need of 2 coaches; a run coach and a walk coach for our Las Vegas Rock N Roll Marathon season. Below are some “job descriptions”. This is a paid position, so if you have any runners that would be interested in coach, please have them contact me at hkerbow@ccfa.org

1.     Develop weekly training schedules for participants to run or walk a half marathon at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

2.     Attend 4 Informational Meetings (scheduled in early August 2011) to review and discuss the training program with potential participants.

3.     Develop training courses and secure park permits, if necessary, with the help of staff from CCFA.

4.     Lead group training sessions Saturday mornings over a 16 week training program.

5.     Establish water stops at appropriate mile markers along route for group training sessions. Establish necessary bathroom stops on route to accommodate our patients who are training. It is recommended every 2 miles for water/bathroom stops.

6.     Ensure that all participants are supported throughout group training session. Coach is to stay until every person finishes safely.

7.     Organize clinics throughout the season to teach participants on correct clothing, shoes, hydration, stretching, sports psychology, etc. Guest speakers are highly encouraged.

8.     Be available for staff and participants weekly via email, phone and in person for any questions relating to training for a half marathon.

9.     Assist staff and participants as necessary during event weekend (December 2-5, 2011) and ensure that all participants finish their race safely. All coaches on site event weekend support all Team Challenge Participants for CCFA.

Thank you in advance for any help you  might be able to provide.
