The Great American Relay

Hello, I'm Vince Varallom the race director for "The Great American Relay" and we are looking for runners in Texas to help us on our way from Boston to California. This is a real relay, not virtual. We are running for 36 consecutive days in 379 legs. The route has 22 legs in Texas from October 8th to 10th. Runners can register on the website, www.greatamericanrelay.com. We are raising money for the American Association for Cancer Research too. We would love to have
you join us.

Annual college scholarships for talented student/runners

The awarding of annual college scholarships for talented student/runners in their senior year of high school is one of our Club’s major activities. Due to tough competition among a strong group of applicants, it required several weeks for the Board to consider the applications and interview the finalists.

Congratulations to:

Madeline Orr won first place among the ladies, receiving $2000. She is graduating from the Woodlands College Park High School and will attend Texas A&M. Caroline Muhith wins $1000. She is graduating from John Cooper and will attend the University of Texas (Austin) to study civil engineering.

Cadan Hanson won among males, receiving $2000. He is graduating from John Cooper and entering Rice University, planning to study biomedical or chemical engineering, Jeffrey Black was second, winning $1000. He is graduating from the Woodlands College Park and has decided to attend Baylor for biochemical engineering, leading toward medicine.

Sunday morning group long runs re-started on May 24th, following Road Runners Club of America recommendations.

Membership renewals and new memberships purchased now will be valid until June 30th, 2021. Please renew now.

Lastly, FYI: there is an app on iOS or Android (viRACE) that allows runners to follow cancelled running events virtually. You can run the specified distance from anywhere. Time and distance are measured by the app and all participants start simultaneously. There are regular races around the world. The app and entry in events are free for all users.

Stay safe,
Leslie

America/Chicago

Folks,

TWRC will restart the Sunday runs on a limited basis for those who feel comfortable running with the usual social distancing (we will space out the start with the faster runners going first).

If you are comfortable, please join us this Sunday @ The Kitchen (H&H on Research) for a run.

As always, the group run is at your own risk and you should not come out if you are not feeling well.

Please bring your own water. No water, Gatorade or ice towels will be provided.

We do not recommend large group gathering before or after the run.

The TWRC group runs will ramp up slowly.

Please see additional RRCA Best Practices for Runners guidelines:

TWRC has canceled the Sunday morning runs for May due to the virus and ongoing social distancing restrictions

UPDATED 5/12/20

The May 17th Sunday run has been canceled.

Running as a formal group is dependent on recommendations from the Woodlands Township and Montgomery County.

If you decide to run Sunday, please be safe and follow the CDC recommendations. While the water fountains along the path may still work, it is not the best idea to use them right now so bring your own water.

(1) Public Health

First and foremost, please draw on expert medical advice from the CDC and from your state and county's public health agencies. The CDC website provides resources, data, and advice for specific populations. See https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html. At this writing, we're in a national state of emergency. As of March 15, the CDC has recommended all gatherings of 50 or more be cancelled until further notice.

When running alone or training in groups, please continue to take all precautions and please be a good health steward. Assuming that you will follow the overarching CDC advice and drawing on public health advisories, RRCA recommends some basic do's and don't's:
• Don’t show up if you are feeling ill or have flu-like symptoms.
• Don't share fluids. Carry your own fluids to avoid contact with others on course.
• Don't share towels, food, gels, or any other item that runners normally share freely.
• Do wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after using the port-a-john.
• Do not spit or “nose rocket” your nose in public – bring along tissues or a small towel or a good old-fashioned hanky if you need to get rid of some snot during the race.
• Do practice social distancing - ensure appropriate spacing between runners; the current recommendation is at least six feet of separation.
• Do avoid close-group selfies.
